I have recently transferred the DNN site to an online server, and I have no idea what is wrong.

The first visit to the URL went to the Install page, so it was ready to do a new install, except that I had just transferred a site that was already setup.

When I altered the connection string I simply got

This site is currently Unavailable

And no errors.

How do I get some errors?

Here's my string:

<customErrors mode="On" />

So where are they?

most likely, you did not adjust the database connection string properly, when transferring the web site. please make sure, both connection strings point to your moved database.

please check both connection strings were updated - you probably also want to check your database details via something such as http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Wiki/Page/Testing-database-connections.aspx (BTW if your database was restored you may need to fix orphaned users - or drop and recreate the user)
