Hi,
I have one question, which may have already discussed here, but I can not find it. It is theuse of cookies in compliance with new EU rules. Is there a DNN plugin that will ensurethat the site will comply with these new rules?

Thx

the rules do not disallow cookies at all, DNN uses cookies for login management. You need to inform users about use of your cookies in your terms or use/privacy policy.

as with much EU rules the guidance is poor and there is confusion on exactly what cookie(s) need to be declared for compliance - most of the interpretations I have seen (e.g. http://www.ico.gov.uk/news/latest_new... ) state that authorization cookies (created at login) , analytics cookies (like google) and 1st & 3rd party advertising cookies are the 3 main categories where the user must be informed before setting the cookie.

However some reports also state that simply declaring their use on a page on your site such as terms/privacy is sufficent to meet compliance, whereas others state that the user must consent (i.e. by checking a box/clicking a button) e.g. http://www.ico.gov.uk/news/latest_new... .

Like much of the industry we're waiting on firm guidelines on the interpretation of the rules and will ensure we're in compliance - at present I believe that in the worst case you would have to add a required checkbox to the registration page to alert people to the use of auth cookies and add text to the login page to state that cookies are used - both of which can easily be done. However we will assess this when the EU clarifies the required implementation details.

Good summary Cathal.

It seems to me that much of this legislation is just political knee-jerking around the bigger privacy issues that the EU is very reluctant to engage with.

I was advised by a clients lawyer that making a statement (separate from the privacy statement) would be advantageous as the site would be seen as trying to comply.

Actually making such a statement is positive in terms of communication with users that the site takes such matters seriously.

All that said I wonder how much appetite there is for enforcement.  In the EU we have disability discrimination law that obliges public website to provide means of enlarging text etc and how many sites do that?

There is an interesting article on this subject  from OutLaw here on the Register
 http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/01/...

and from the earlier missed deadline for tis directive
 http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/05/...

Last point: How do the EU think all these "free" services offered by websites get paid for?

 Sigh!
