Is there an answer for this?

I have the same error which just appeared last week (after applying the latest DNN community version update). No emails are going out (other than to administrator) and the event log shows the same error as Fred has. I have spent the last two days checking all answers, configuring SMTP settings with authentication in host/settings, only allowing Relay setting 'Local users' in mail server settings, and checked the box 'Disable AUTH LOGIN method for SMTP authentication'.

What has changed?

Update: After lots of trial and error with different settings, I found that setting the email configuration (SmarterMail) to 'Allow Relay: Only local users', and unchecking 'Disable relay settings when using SMTP authentication' worked. However, I am not happy with these settings in case they pose a security risk? And why did the DNN upgrade cause this to need changing?

Am I missing something?

In DNN Host/settings - SMTP server settings I use 'Basic' authentication with a valid username and password.

if you are allowing relay from local users only, any potential spammer would need an application on your server and still get to know the user and password name - i.e. it should be safe to go this route.

Thank you, Sebastian. I have set up extra validation for user passwords just to be more secure.

At least the notifications are now working correctly, though still not sure why they stopped.
