FYI "core" modules were removed in 6.1.0 - this blog post http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Blogs/EntryId/3214/DotNetNuke-Alert-The-Modules-are-Missing.aspx explains the rationale behind that, and added an easy way to find approriate modules with the extension catalog (http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Blogs/EntryId/3131/DotNetNuke-Extension-Catalog.aspx) - (sort by price if you are only interested in free modules)

It is clear that DNN Corp has let aside the Forums module (current and AF).

The current Forum module has a lot problems but it has been discontinued. Some of the problems can be seen here, for example when you post and you see "Unavailable" errors.

The "new" AF module has been also neglected, probably because Forums are a bit OUR OF FASHION.

This is the truth unfortunately no matter how we try to hide it.

Costas,

The old DotNetNuke forum (http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/E...) is not a DNN Corp product, it's a free opensource product that Chris Paterra has worked diligently on for many years. Whilst Chris is a Corp employee, and has been given some time in work to do work on it, it is not now or ever been a DNN Corp product.

As for the new module, we acquired it as part of the ActiveModules acquisition, and decided that as it had a more modern base and some excellent capabilities that it would be the one that we would use on dotnetnuke.com. Whilst there have been a few forks, with us pulling back from a merge of the old and new, our plan as always has been to get it working well and use it on dotnetnuke.com, and then release it as a free opensource module. We do not intend to get into the business of module authoring as it's much better for the ecosystem to allow other parties the opportunity to do that and make money, but as we effectively removed a popular 3rd party component from an area where there were only 2 other valid choices, we thought it benefited the community to give it back free.

Your complaint seems to be that we are not spending enough money and resources to provide you with an alternative free forum as quickly as you would like- I'm not sure how we can answer that as we limited resources and have to make subjective decisions on how best to spend our time. I've communicated a few times that it will be coming as soon as time and resources allow, I'm sorry if that does not meet your needs.

Cathal,

It is not a complain.

There is an excellent Forum module available for free (YAF forum), i could use it if i wanted (and i do for an other customer of mine).

It is just that forums are not a la mode and apparently this project is pushed back. Simple. Just something i wanted to say, i still love and use DNN, and will do so in the future.

Sorry if i sounded harsh or anything, English is not my language and i try my best.

Costas

This thread seems to be mostly DNN users trying to get information about a component of of DNN that many customers do use as an important piece of the CMS.

My complaint would be that the communication on how DNN would handle forums particularly in 6.2 after the acquisition of Active Forums / Active Social was let's just, lacking.

Consider for instance a case like mine where as a DNN CMS user, I bought an older version of Active Forums and was considering upgrading to the latest version, enterprise no less, only to come across threads indicating that the forums would be included as part of DNN 6.2.   I won't go into the relative importance of forums, which can vary from site to site, but for some DNN users this could be pretty important.

I think there is an issue with the difficulty in getting clear direction on where the forum feature of DNN was going to land and WHEN it was going to land.   It requires that you search for it and then go through multiple "forum" threads to sort through what is actually happening.

Ironically forums are the only place I've found any detailed helpful information on this, so I guess forums still have their place in the social eco-system.

At this point I guess its' clear from a thread like this that for 6.2 forums, users just have to wait because the final solution is simply not ready. If forums are important for your site now, then you have to cross your fingers that the module you choose migrates well into the next forums when they release and either way you hope that your module integrates well with new DNN social features.

The point of Active Social / Active Forums seemed to be that since they were acquired by DNN corp, users would expect excellent integration with the new social features.   So that's what I've pieced together from what has been communicated so far.  A prominently placed posting somewhere would have been nice that detailed this information and was updated as the status changed.
