Hi,

I'm building my first DNN site. I copied a new DNN 6.2 install pack on the httpdocs folder in my site santapepa.com and run the install process. The site was created successfully.

Now I need to create a child portal named cr5. First I went to my Plesk Control Panel and created cr5 as a subdomain, then in Host - Site Management I created the child portal with alias cr5.santapepa.com.

I could'n access it directly through my web browser, only if I typed the address as santapepa.com/default.aspx?alias=cr5.santapepa.com I accessed the Home page, but could'n edit the Site Settings, nor add pages...

I've tried to follow some tutorials on Adding Portals but, since they refer to localhost, virtual directories, etc, I don't understand how to adapt their instructions to my case. Please help me and thanks in advance for your kind attention.

Santapepa,

AFAIK a child portal does not need a subdomain host header. You just create the child portal as www.santapepa.com/cr5.

But there is no reason to do that. The child portal has it's own user base, and therefore users have to register on both portals. If you want cr5.santapepa.com, just add a new portal to your installation and assign the alias. (Then you have to register the subdomain as well!)

Best wishes

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your help. Perhaps I should explain better. I have to build 2 separated sites. I own the domain santapepa.com. The 2nd site (cr5) will have its own domanin in the future. By now I'm building it inside santapepa. I'm having a hard time with all this thing of subdomains and child portals. I only want to know a easy way to work with cr5, as I can't access it.

It's me again,

I've deleted cr5 and I've created a new child portal from scratch with a different name. Successfully! So, no need to create a subdomain. Then, what's the use of subdomains?

Santapepe,

you can create a second (third, fourth...) parent portal (not a child portal) on the same installation of DNN. Therefore you need this subdomain (or C-NAME). If you do it this way, there are many advantages:

1) Adding a new domainname is no problem at all.
2) If you decide to move this second protal to an own installation, it is quite easy to separate the portals.

A child portal appears as a "subdirectory" of the main portal (like www.mydomain.com/childportal), but as any other portal, it has it's own userbase etc. I never found any advantage in doing so.

But what you want is definitely a second (parent) portal on the same installation. Do this by the following steps:

1) enter the host header in the IIS, i.e. cr5.santapepe.com
2) In System :: Site Management, click "Add New Site"
3) Select Parent, enter cr5.santapepe.com as the site alias and enter the other fields as you like. If you do not want to start with the bike shop, choose the "Blank Website" template.

Best wishes
Michael
