Hi Mark, on IIS 7.5 I used to configure one Application Pool per Website, the Application pool take the same name than the website. The identity for the app pool is set by default : ApplicationPoolIdentity and it's work.
Please try with an other app pool than the default one (DefaultAppPool).
The user name to allow in security for the folder where is your dnn application can't be found in the advenced search, you must type it entirely. On the folder where is your dnn application, right clic, properties, Security, Edit, Add..., type : IIS APPPool\YourPoolName then clic the "Check Name" button, if good, you'll see you Application Pool Name underlined. Then OK, and Allow Modify and Write Permission, OK.

Thank you again, Julien (sorry for the delay - was away from my computer yesterday). No luck, so far. Stepped back and looked at permissions for the web folder and its subfolders. I tried a number of changes related to the app pool identity but all result in the original behavior. As it currently stands (as an example), I am using DefaultAppPool and have assigned permissions to that identify but still receive the same error.

Since all of my efforts have involved trying to fix this at the permissions level (without success), I still have this hunch that this is not a permissions error. The error message I receive (see original post in this thread) at least implies that this is a "schema" difference between 7.0 and 7.5. To reiterate, I restored this same web.config to a 7.0 server - and, importantly, configured permissions for the web folder - and it just worked. Using those same steps on the 7.5 server results in these errors.

Thanks in advance again for any thoughts you might have on this.

Mark

I figured this out. As I suspected, the issue was one of invalid schema on the web.config. I had not installed URL Rewrite 2.0 on the target server. While the error message was frustrating (it could at LEAST have pointed at the problematic lines, IMHO) it did suggest that there was something about the XML it didn't like. Sure enough, without URL Rewrite installed the web.config broke. I installed that and all is well now.

The following URL was a significant clue in fixing this: http://forums.iis.net/t/1174954.aspx

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Mark
