Nina - I do share the frustrations, however I'm getting too old to let these issues get to me, certainly the highest level of frustration was that I assumed that this latest release was just that "another production release". However like all software I have a rather rigid process of test, preprod and prod, so the frustrations are minimised, and if it starts to get to me I put on some of my fravorite playlists and get back on track.

Any additional effort is a cost to us as implementers or users, however this is the IT world. I would not like to see the DNN community or delivery of DNN change from it's original vision, this is unique and having been involved in IT for over 20 years, I welcome this aproach. Microsoft .Net is a great framework and a different development framework from the past, DNN is a strong project which explotes the .Net framework.

Like most of us, I have to document my discoveries along the way, the DNN project is dynamic and subject to new "discoveries" along the way, however I hate having to address the same issues each time, my repository of technical bulletins resolves this.

I feel that since .Net was released, our toolbox needs to be filled, by this I mean that we need knowledge across many technologies, some of the posts to this site are not caused by DNN but from an uderstanding of other related configurations and technologies, and we are all learning as we go.

I think that DNN needs to be a diverse product, putting into a box would limit the audience, I personally like to diversity that it delivers.

What we must expect and accept is that the underlying architecture for DNN is changing and for this reason the existing documentation may not address some of the discoveries that we are seeing, It's changing for the better and I have yet to find a commercial product that quickly adopts such change so quickly - this does translate to benefits. Having said that the existing documentation is of extreme value and is always providing a very value reference to me, In fact I have a hardcopy close at hand at all times.

I know have a need for Oracle data providers and I will expense more effort into understanding this subject, however like everything in the project this effort has high reuse within DNN and outside the effort is worthwhile.

I work towards my clients saying "WOW" at the time of delivering a solution, and yes I go through some pain to achieve this, but the end result is very much worth the effort and at time the effort may not be commercially viable, however providing I have control over the effort I can accept this.

In reply to "I find it interesting about the comments of trying for days and it worked for me "whims" when you've yet to post details about the issues you're experiencing."  I don't see how it is useful to post yet another thread about the same issue many other threads are already discussing.  If I am having this many problems, and am clearly not the only one having them, then it does not give me high hopes that DNN is a viable solution that will remain stable into future versions.

That being said, in reply to Craig, DNN still seems to be the best choice for me for a multitude of reasons.  I appreciate your efforts in trying to de-escalate the ugliness that seems to be erupting around this new/preview version.  I plan on following your advice; I am going to take a deep breath, take a nice nap, and do a big do-over with 4.0.3.

If you take your nap and start dreaming of what DotNetNuke already delivers then your on the right track :)

I would be keen to see how you get on and will help where possible, you are right about the many posts, they typically do not contain a lot of quality as far as those of us prepared to help the community resolve such issues. It is certainly difficult to assertain the environment and circumstances in which the issues have been encountered. I also appreciate that at times it is difficult to know what information to provide when seeking help. But simply stating that it "does not work" or "error encountered" really inflates the forum with little value to anyone.

I do hope that you experience the same level of excitment as I do with this product, but it does need to be in the context of a stable release. I'm now in the process of testing some of the later modules that have been released in version 4.3.0 against DNN 4.0.3 core and so far certain modules are looking good, This will mean that there will be later modules that we can use in the stable release of DNN (4.0.3) and get some benefit from the new modules like forum and gallery etc.

I have an idea for a way to structure documentation for the many ways DNN can be installed.  Because this project is based on the DotNet framework, why not make a program in Visual Basic that generates unique instructions based on how the install is being done, e.g. A new person downloads DNN 4.x, and they are exited to install it, so instead of them getting discouraged with days of reading forum posts trying to figure out how to install it, there can be a program that has drop down menus for each category such as “database type”, “DNN Version”, “Windows Version”, “Local install or Hosted” ext.  After they select their configuration, the program can generate a list of instructions based on their needs.  There might also need to be another DNN team just dedicated to keeping up documentation similar to the teams that keep modifying the modules.  I am not a very experienced programmer, but with my limited programming background I can picture how this program can be created very easily just with simple “if” statements.

If a program such as this was created, I really think that it would change how a lot of people feel about the documentation problem.  DotNetNuke is such a great open source application, I hate to see documentation make some people to have a bad outlook on it.

This could be used to provide some reporting feedback on what was done and what was missed - kind of a QA of the install based on the requirements, and even perform a precheck of sorts.  90% of the problems I've had with installs has been around setting the permissions properly (especially after configuring FP Extensions).  It could log permission checks and DB access based on the config, and most important - the person could copy and paste the details into the forum to save having to ask those pertinent questions.
