Is it safe to upgrade in this fashion. I have to update the files as well right?

of course, first is in any case to unzip DNN package into your DNN installation directory, overwriting all existing system files.

What could be the reason of the error it is displaying, do I need to start all the process again. I think  database problem is not there?

I have never seen this issue before, it might be caused by missing permissions.
The safest option is restoring previous database and files backup and restart upgrade again.

Hi sebastian,

Thanks for reply..  I have tried by manual way and it work the site got upgraded from 4.9.2 to 4.9.5 , after upgrading to 5.4 , when I try to open the website it is displaying following error: Please guide how can I solve this
