Hi,

I checked out CodePlex first thing this morning and spotted that the 'RC' had been removed from Blog 5.0.0. I have been eagerly awaiting this but one or two of the Release Highlights made me a bit wary, so I decided to install it on a test portal that already had Blog 4.1.1 installed with a few (categorised) test blogs. I'm glad I did as I'm a little disappointed.

To start with, I do like:

- The new look in general.

- The new menu (Add Blog Part, Blog Settings, View Blog, Add Blog Entry) at the top of the Blog.

- Being able to re-date a blog.

However, my issues:

1. Apparently no option for a Read More button. Up until Blog 4.1.1, my blogs could be short (with no Read More button) or long (with one). Now readers don't know whether there is more to read or not.

2. Blog categories:

A. I have two identical Blog Topics in the Admin > Taxonomy > List of Vocabularies, is it safe to delete one?

B. Whilst my existing categories were already listed, the blog posts needed to be edited to be categorised again, which was OK for my limited test but some of my sites have numerous blog entries.

C. When editing the posts to re-add the categories, I noted that the boxes and text don't line up (the first category text is above the first tick box with the second category text lined up to that).

3. Recent Entries:

- My Recent Entries module was removed during the upgrade. I know that the Release Highlights on CodePlex says "Removed 'recent entries' module definition. The same functionality (even more advanced than what was available) is provided today using the Journal and Journal type filters (a similar approach is being taken with comments)" but how to do this? My sites don't use the social features, I just need a list of recent entries as before.

Thanks for any help on these.

  1. The "Read More" was removed but I think it is very debatable if that is going to confuse readers, I see many sites that take a similar approach without the 'read more' (I also see others that still have it). I am not trying to debate here that you are right or wrong, I am just saying this particular item is very opinionated.
  2. A: Depending on if you ever used an RC or not in the install (I will assume no since it was RC until now), you should have a blog topics category created for each portal that utilized categories in the blog module (in an upgrade scenario) because the taxonomy is portal specific (this is how the core works). You will have to investigate each vocabulary (from Admin -> Taxonomy) one by one to see if there is/isn't an issue here. B/C: The updated blog should migrate taxonomy for each portal (and blog entry), it should also set the module settings to the proper vocabulary setting (Blog Topics) for that portal during the upgrade. If upgrade occurs and blogs still are not in the proper categories (after you ensured cache was cleared, just in case) then there is a situation where categories are not being upgraded in some upgrades (for some reason, unknown at this time).
  3. Regardless of your site using social elements, the journal is still your answer as the blog post summaries will go there regardless of you using social elements or not. All you have to do is drop the Journal module on a page and set the filter type for 'blog' journal type (and disable the comment capabilities) and it functions pretty much like the old recent entries. Because this same exact data is passed to the journal now, there is no reason to maintain another piece of code that is doing the same thing.

The blogger authoring mode is still not working for me. Tried it on two installs. It goes back as the original author. Also the add blog post button does not appear until I click on an existing blog post?

A few things I've noticed:

1. No roles were automatically created and I cannot manually create the roles because I don't know the role name.

2. After logging in as the site admin and viewing a blog entry, I cannot log out. I have to close the browser tab and reopen it to log out.

Is this module really ready for prime-time and is it up to the core standards of other modules?
