I am using the standard DNN menu on DNN 6.2.3, I see that the sub-menu items work fine on a computer but don't on an iPAD.

Anyone know if there is an easy fix or patch for this?

Scott,

as there is no "hover" event on touch screens, it is quite a challenge for the skin designer to solve this. You should use a menu that does not popup submenus on hover events, but displays them after clicking. An example of a site that works that way have a look at http://www.innsbruck.gv.at (even if this is not a DNN site and only in German atm - only to get an idea of the menu).

Best wishes
Michael

Hi Scott.

DNN has a similar problem with Windows-based touch screens.  Generally, you cannot access sub-menu selections because there is no hover event. Touching a menu simply activates the top level menu link and does not display lower-level menu choices.  This will become increasingly problematic as increasing numbers of users gravitate to tablets, smart phones and PCs that use touch screens.  I came across the following link that may give you some ideas for resolving the problem.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libra...

Hovering a cursor over a webpage element is a common action when browsing with a mouse and keyboard, but there is no equivalent in touch-based browsing.  In Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8, you can use the aria-haspopup DOM property to simulate mouse hover functionality in touch-based scenarios.  Unfortunately, this does not work for Windows 7 systems.  However, the above link will give you some ideas of other areas to explore.

Actually this is a general problem for all websites not really a DNN specific problem..
There are two ways around this, but in principle the solution is quite simple, even for non tablet specific skins with drop downs.

You can set all menu items with children to disabled in the page settings.
In that case they don't respond to the click any more.
But you have to change your content flow as in that case these parent pages don't show any content any more.

The other option is to choose / create a skin with a click and not hover based menu.
For one client we have both now: http://www.designacademy.nl/EVENTS.aspx

You can use the drop down menu to quickly navigate or the icons on a tablet..

I installed the free menu from Coding staff and it seemed to take care of the issue. Even though, there is no hover feature on ipads, when you click on it, there is a script that interprets the one-click as a hover, and it shows the sub-menu. Many of the skins out there now say 'ipad' friendly, and so I'm stumped to why this wouldn't be featured on the main DNN dark knight skin.
