What a PITA that was. I am not comfortable with the solution I came up with but DNN7 finally installed and the site is working, so far.

Seems the issue is related to default security for IIS7.5 and WinServ 2008 R2 and apps created with VS2010 or older. I had to set the application identity pool in IIS to NETWORK SERVICE user. Strange thing is, the article references SQLExpress, however, I am using SQL Standard 2008

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2002980

I then also had to add NETWORK SERVICE user to the database security, otherwise the installer could not connect to the database.

I have spent more than a day on what should have been a simple upgrade.

I get an error when I try to go to the next page in this thread?
I have same problem and I'm tearing my hair out. This must be issue with lastest DNN install packages. Back to 7.3.1. I have been using this method to install DNN from the start and never had so much trouble.

this was driving me up the wall. I ended up doing as per the post and that made no difference.

But i then deleted the web site, app pool and DB and started again and it worked..

sorry for posting the above three times accidentally. Happened because the site gave me no indication that anything was happening. And I can't delete the duplicates.
