Hi,

 I had same problems and did a complete analysis of it. Check out for virtual directories in IIS, possibly "desktopmodules" one.

Complete analysis can be found here: http://blog.hemit.fr/2013/07/dotnetnu...

Good news is that it's not directly linked to DNN, but more to the way of working.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Frederic

PS: I hope I'm not creating a duplicate post... I got no error or warning message when trying to submit first time, so I guess it just got lost.

Great solution, I created a Dnn Module using the DNN template for VS2012 and it had configured a Virtual Directory named "Desktop Modules" :-(

I've also debugged dnn , the error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." was in the LoadSkin function, it fails to load the ascx module and it tries to use a property of a null object:

skin = LoadSkin(page, skinSource);  //fails and traps the exception
....
skin.ID = "dnn"; //cause another exception

I had removed the virtual directory and I solved the problem, thanks.

Wow you guys are life savers, any idea what causes this?  I couldn't think of anything I had done that would have triggered this to happen but thankfully it was an easy fix.

Install the website in your browser without trying to compile in Visual Studio. This will place the DDRMenu files into the Desktop Modules folder. After the installation then you can compile in Visual Studio.
