I am an experienced developer who is new to DNN development. I had tried to meet requirements for a project with the DNN store, but it is looking more like I might need to roll my own module. I sat down today to set up a completely new DNN development environment to develop and publish my first "Hello World" module to our internal test DNN site.

Currently, all our internal codebase is VS2010/SQL2008R2/ASP.NET/VB/MS Dynamics SL.

At first, I found Chris Hammond's DNN7 Template post. I had hoped to stay with VS2010, but VS2012 is an option if I can get everything else to work. So, I dived in, and started grinding through the instructions. I got the VSIX project templates here. When I got around to downloading the CE version of DNN7 (we use Pro internally but I don't think I can license a copy for DEV), I noticed there is a "Starter Kit" that is a VSI extension. The VSIX was a tiny download at 500k, but the VSI download is a monster at 44MB. I was under the impression that the VSI extension might mean visual studio project templates, but there must be more to it than that.

Is this the CE "Install" with "project templates" thrown in? If so, any chance they are good with VS2010?

The VSI will only install if Visual Studio is present, so I also found that an odd way to install DNN.

Any advise is also appreciated. I am sticking to the original link above, but wanted to ask because I don't have time to explore and am curious.

Regards,

Stuart

DNN Starter Kit contains full DNN install and 2 templates for modules as well as one for skins.
AFAIK the included templates haven't been updated for some time, I would go with Chris Hammonds templates instead.
