Since yesterday, I have installed DNN twice to try to correct this very problem. The first time I used  7.01.02 and used the blank template. My web host, Newtek, insisted it was this blank template error. So, I did a clean reinstall using version 7.02.00 and used the default template. Still getting the 404 error and really, it acts differently in different browsers. In Firefox it just keeps asking for authentication and in IE it shows the site but gives a 404 error if you click on anything. I did try to add the <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true"> solution and it just gave another error.

I keep insisting this is an IIS issue but if neither template works, then how are we supposed to get this installed? This is actually the 4th reinstall for this same site in a week or so because of having so many issues and I can't even determine whether they are caused by my hosting environment or by DNN, which seems more problematic with each new version. I have been using this product since 2003 and the installs starting with the 7xxx versions have all been a problem.

Hi,

Do you already try to change in the web.config the urlformat from "advanced" to "humanfriendly".

This will add the .aspx file extention to the urls.

Just to see if it is the IIS patch who is missing.

Sacha

I have seen also that when you add .aspx to your urls, it redirect to the url without .aspx

Many chances it is the IIS patch who is missing.

Well, adding solution to the modules section in the web.config finally worked, however, I now cannot create a second portal which is why I reinstalled from two versions ago so at every step I still have issues. Off to create a new thread to try to figure that one out.....

I have similar problem. I use 7.2.0. The 404 problem touches login control. I used to use standard login control to which lead me the "Login" button - there was no login page specified. Later I added such page with login control and quickly deleted this page - I thought that I will return to default DNN login page - but I didn't. Right now I have 404 error when I want to display the login page. This problem touches only one site - I have three in the whole. Anybody came across similar problem? The only way I may get to login page is through http://name.pl/default.aspx?ctl=login.
