I expect the source package to run DNN exactly like the install package. The source is there for the people who want to look at the source. OK so I have to compile it. No big deal. It's a quick one time thing. But it has to install and work! I gave up on the source package because it just didn't work and I wasn't going to waste any more time on it.  The source package is not an edge case. Look at the download numbers at Codeplex. Source downloaders are 33% of the number of the install package. That's a hefty number.  You say you want to concentrate on the newbies. Isn't the web installer for newbies? It gets the  lowest number of downloads.

I am saying that whoever packaged the source package and making it available for download, you need to do a quick test and see if it installs fine as a fresh install. It takes less than 5 minutes.

I doubt the relative download numbers prove much. I always download both the install and the source packages. I use the former to install DNN and the source package for reference for my own development efforts.  For me though, and many others, I imagine the source code package *is* an edge case - looking at the platform source code is of course invaluable on the very odd occasion I need to but it's very, very rare that I ever *need* to compile it.

This is an epic thread and locking it down would be a mistake.

I can sense from the posts here, that there may still be enough juice in this community to take free and open source DNN to the next level. A fork would be a disaster. But a separate community that could submit patches with bugfixes and performance upgrades is sorely missed. Patches considered too risky or unwanted for other reasons could be bundled up and offered as a community provided install. We could gather up the best gold from the forge and other sources. Since the incorporation of the corp everything that is free and open have been scattered to bits and pieces everywhere across the net. All this needs a new home. Just sayin.

Did you think the forums were gone or did you have a hard time finding them? Some people were complaining about how the forums are buried in the new site. You seem to be a proof!

If they were ever difficult to find before, they don't seem to be now :)

How to find the forums:

Method 1:

1. Type "dnn community forums" in Google.
2. Click on first result.

Method 2:

1. Enter "www.dnnsoftware.com" in your browser's address bar.
2. From the menu, select "Community/Community Forums".

Darin, to be fair: Method 2 is just available since last weekend. Method 1 requires additional knowledge (you need to know there is a company with this name I forgot, it started with a G, AFAIR

This thread has provided a lot of good feedback, spawned new ideas and several new projects have started as a result of it.   To lock it or delete it will definitely light a fire.  At the same time, I do think we need to stop rambling and start getting things done.

I'll start new threads and take part in any that spawn from this.  I'll also commit to any DNN Open Source related sites that start up from this.  The more the better.  Hopefully we can come up with some new ideas for improvements that will allow DNN to take on the next chapter with fierce passion from the community.
