There is no evidence that DNN is giving the same cold shoulder to people that want to buy their $3000 or $12,000 packages.

If for some reason you find their offering a good value proposition for your purposes, I wouldn't let this conversation turn you away.

I do however think that without some significant change of direction, you can expect to see more folks abandoning DNN when it comes to the community version. This would likely have a notable impact as far as fewer 3rd party modules, skins, etc. being available. I base this assumption on the fact that SiteFinity (a commercial only product) has a much smaller selection of 3rd party goodies. It only makes sense. Who would develop modules for a small or shrinking market.

As an example, I spent this very evening finding ways to get rid DNN off my servers and improve my site at the same time. To me it's a matter of principle and a lack of affordable, suitable offerings. From what I can see, I'm not alone.

DNN versions are still regularly released with improvements. However, DNN has not been a fertile ground for developers any more. DNN corp has decided to absolutely abandon its community now. But don't be surprised, this is on plan, this is foreseeable. DNN has never release any systematic or official documents that guide developers to develop plugins which are compatible with current DNN version as well as adaptable with the changes of DNN in the future.
If you use Google to search for "DNN module developing" document or book, you will get only out-of-date documents those are unsystematic/discrete and based on personal experience of author. The most significant book regards with Dnn module development, in my opinion, is "Professional DotNetNuke Module Programming" written by Mitchel Sellers. However, it was written in 2009, that it was for DNN version 5.x. If you follow the book to create modules for DNN version 7.x and have problem with compatible issues, you have to manage to solve them yourself because I think that even the author would has problems in developing modules for DNN 7.x.
Again, you must have heard about www.dnncreative.com a site that provide tutorials for subscribed user. You could find that this site hardly has recent tutorial regards with module developments. If it has, it is out-of-date. The tutorials, those are related to DNN 7.x, most of them are simple instructions that guide user how to build website using basic DNN modules.
The admin people of the site must now have struggling time to interpret/guess the way new DNN versions working. They may be in the same situation as community developers are suffering.
DNN future is unstable for community developers. That keeping silent regardless upset voices from community is a clear message from DNN corp that "In the time left, let find your own way before we shut the door".
So let get survived by building small projects based on DNN. In the meanwhile, try to learn other CMS like wordpress for example to prepare for something big in your future.
That's my way.
I feel ashamed because I used to aggressively participate in arguments in the past to prove that DNN was more advanced over other CMS and now I have to leave.

I thoughtWordpress was just blog software.

Not sure what alternatives there are in the .NET arena. I have looked at Umbraco and can't find my feet with it. The way DNN works seems so logical.

I first posted in this thread on 21st August and watched as other people added their comments to what I consider a serious complaint about DNN and nothing of any substance from the DNN team came back! At the same time I installed Umbraco 6 and signed up to the tutorials. It's just over 6 weeks since then and I'm almost at the point of completing my first migration from DNN to Umbraco and it's the best thing I've done. The frustration of weeks and months of trying to find answers to DNN problems and getting nowhere with the DNN Forum or other web sites, answers were either for older versions or simply couldn't be found. At the same time I get email after email from DNN about Evoq with subjects such as 'how to turn visitors into fans', which is quite annoying when I'm trying to simply find a guide on how to develop on DNN7!
Developing on Umbraco 6 is easy, as with anything new there is a learning curve but it is easy to follow especially when using the tutorials. It was sad leaving DNN behind as I've put a lot of time and effort in to using it for client web sites and selling the idea to them as a good solution but one thing they all complained about was performance, DNN is slow to render pages, Umbraco is lightning fast in comparison. The web sites I create are Intranet applications, so unfortunately I can't show my progress but believe me when I say I'm filled with hope and optimism again and know that I will be able to keep my clients happy being able to extend and develop their sites using Umbraco. And one last thing, you can create the equivalent of Portals, which was very important to me.
