I went to upgrade a client's DNN install last Sunday from 6.1.1 to 7.0.0.6.  Did not realize that the Network Solutions servers hosting the account were running .NET Framework 2.0 and that 7.X requires 4.0 minimum.  Saw the errors, understood the issue, tried to restore from previous nights backup - would not work.  Network Solutions has now been "working" on the restore issue since Sunday and has no progress or ETA to report (nor do they seem to care at all).

I was able to restore the DB to the prior version, thankfully that backup worked okay.  So, now I'm wondering if I could maybe just copy the Upgrade Package for 6.2.1 over the top of what's there now and let it run.  I'm not sure all the details of how it does file upgrades, but obviously I can force it to overwrite any duplicates.

Any thoughts on whether this is workable or not?

I would test ALL IDEAS somewhere else.

Then I'd try unzipping the full install for your version (6.1.1). Change the config file to point to A COPY OF your recovered database, and see what happens. You are going to have to reinstall all the additional modules, skins, etc that the site uses. Never tried it but I think this has a decent chance of success.

I'm not sure if there is special magic in the install config file. It may be that my idea is not that great and the upgrade package for 6.1.1 might be a better place to start. Trouble is that AIUI the upgrades don't have any config file at all. You'll need one from somewhere.

I think if you try the upgrade package you mentioned you'll still have to do all the stuff I've mentioned plus you have the added complication of an upgrade.

If my suggestion doesn't work you still have alternatives. Good luck. It would be great if you did document your route out of this for others. I'm sure this kind of situation is not that unusual.

Best wishes,

downgrade is not really an option, contact your hosting provider and ask them to move your site to a server running an up2date OS and SQL Server.

PS: And please remember always to start an upgrade with a full (working) backup of all files and the database..

Thanks for the information, Richard - that is helpful. I just got a note from tech support saying they've "processed all the events on the server side" and I should be able to restore now - we shall see.

Sebastian - not sure if you read my post or not, but I DID have a backup (many, in fact) that I had every reason to believe were "working." I have restored from backup in the past without issue. I am not dealing with Network Solutions any more nor ever again after this fiasco. As soon as the site is back up, I will make my own backup and move the site to a more reliable host.
