Ok, this is what I have done now. Restored from previous again (7.1.0). Made sure NETWORK SERVICE (application pool user) had all permissions in wwwroot and in DotNetNuke_Community_07.01.02_Upgrade. Deleted the Install folder in wwwroot to remove all old files. Copied upgrade over and performed upgrade. This time no errors! Site is working fine for all normal users. However, I still can't get into Host settings or Admin site settings.

I performed the resources upgrade as per Sebatian's suggestion and got no errors:

In the main site for site or host settings I get:

A critical error has occurred. Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
When I go to Site or host settings in one of the portals I get:

A critical error has occurred. Could not load file or assembly 'FileHelpers, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=3e0c08d59cc3d657' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
I am at a loss how to proceed ...

'FileHelpers, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=3e0c08d59cc3d657' is not part of the DNN Platform, so it is added from a 3rd Party module. Found it on Web.config end comment it out or delete it.

The module who used this is not compatible with the new DNN version.

If you only runn the resource Installation the base System is still on the old one.  You have also run the mode=upgrade to upgrade the DNN Platform to new Version.

Hi Matthias

I ran it with mode=upgrade first. It was successful but the module installations were blank, which is why I subsequently ran the resource installation.

There is no sign in web config of this and I am struggling to find the module in question. I have seen similar posts here with the same error after the upgrade, so I will keep searching and also try to recompile our own modules, although they are all working fine on the web site.

This issue is now fixed, after much searching and struggling to find a solution. The solution turned out to be simple - I downloaded FileHelpers.dll from FileHelpers.com and placed it in the bin folder of wwwroot on the web server.

I reckon that a previous installation of a module failed to copy this file, possibly due to a permissions issue. All working now.
