I am currently using DotNetNuke Version: 04.09.02.    What are the problems  or pitfalls I am likely to run into in upgrading. If I do proceed how do I back up my contents so as not to lose them ?

Hello,

From a version that old, I would definitely think you should update. But, it might be messy. I would test it a few times on a fresh copy of your current site before you do it live. Also, be mindful of DNN's suggested upgrade path:

Also - be aware that the system requirements changed pretty significantly around versions 6-7... so, you'll need to make sure your server can accommodate the latest versions.

I did a couple of upgrades from DNN 4.x to DNN 7.
My advices:
- start with a backup of database and all files
- remove all extensions you are definitely not using in your website(s)
- check all other extensions for upgrade compatibility (e.g. DNN XML module needs to be upgraded prior upgrading DNN above version 5.3)
- upgrading in steps, the more extensions installed, the less of the following list should be skipped: DNN 5.2.3, DNN 5.4.4, DNN 5.6.8, DNN 6.1.5,.Net 4, DNN 6.2.9, DNN 7.1.2
- I prefer using /install/install.aspx?mode=upgrade, which is easiest to handle and provides results list
- after unzipping an ugrade package, I remove all unnecessary modules and providers from /install subfolders
