I installed the new package twice with the same result.

configuring site/ apppool/folder permissions/ database with iis apppool\... with owner permissions according to the good instructions in the vidios.

upon completion of the wizard and clicking the button to go to site the popup cycled  continuously . reloading and attempting to log in I get:(in the login pop up)  I repeated this twice on server 2008r2 standard .....

typically this indicates the server is missing http://support.microsoft.com/kb/980368 which is usually applied and is necessary for extensionless url's (or else you can switch to humanfriendly url handling)

it sounds like an issue with Website Alias, please check database table PortalAlias and report, which URLs are included

I reviewed my  server (i usually prefer to manually update it) and brought its updates current with the windows update process.

this seems to have repaired the the problem.

 

thanks to all who looked at this and responded.
