Sounds like you are running with Cassini (the web server built in to the VS environment) rather than with IIS on localhost. DNN redirects to standard portals (look in the Portal table) and as each instance of Cassini comes up on a separate random port, DNN work against Cassini never works

Not sure what you mean by DNN work against Cassini never works. I'm not a knowledgebase on Cassini itself, but in using VS2005 with a DNN install as a file system based site through VS (source version) I have no problems navigating to the site as long as VS is open (through F5 or right click the default.aspx and browse).

TStoker - what OS version do you have? I'd suggest changing the site to IIS if you have Win2k or above, and working with VS in HTTP mode.  There would be less confusion that way, and you could test the site without requiring VS (and the dev environ) to be running.

Well never works may be an overstatement

But if you launch Cassini, and install the site, the portal "knows" the random port "localhost:1234" THis works fine as long as you maintain the session. The next time, Cassini may come up on a new port "3456" - and DNN will automatically re-direct for localhost:3456 to the original localhost:1234. THe problem is, that cassini is not currently listening on port 1234. Hence the issue.

I can repeat this on multiple PCs on multiple databases. I can also correct it for a session be editing the portal alias in the database.

Change the setting for the project so that the Casini does not use a dynamic Port.  You can then assign a port that it will use every time for the project.
