I am using webhosting4life as my hosting provider and have used their installer to install the DNN version 4.0.2.  I have now downloaded the webfiles and database to my local hard drive to begin some custom work.

I opened the webfiles in VS2005 as a file system and modified my webconfig to point to the local database.  When I ran it the first time it went directly to my live site so I realized I needed to modify the portal alias table.  However now when I change the URL to http://localhost:2032/sapaonline then run the site it just gives me the standard page can not be displayed message.

Any help would be great!!

Have you tried it without the ":2032"?  Rather than guess at the URL, if you are using VS, right click on the default.aspx file in the explorer and choose "View in Browser".  This will spawn IE and serve the page (normally - if you're set up the default manner in VS).

You might also look at setting it up as a local IIS site - it works either way, but then you can adjust the IIS settings if needed for other reasons.

Still no luck...I even redownloaded it from my website again and I set it up as a virtual directory and when I run it I get page can not be displayed.

What am I missing?

I'd try this first (after ensuring all IIS services are running in Services Control Panel):

  1. setup a basic HTML page on your default website on the local machine (to test IIS)
    1. in IIS - make sure the web is started
    2. right click on the HTML page and select view in browser
    3. if it displays OK - go on to step 2 if not you have to figure out what's wrong with IIS
  2. Download and install a fresh DNN install from www.dotnetnuke.com - with teh same version as your site.
    1. use the Install.ZIP or starter kit.zip (better chioce since you want to use VS)
    2. get that working first
  3. Copy your real site files over the new install
    1. Make a copy of your web.config file first somewhere else
    2. copy all files over
    3. paste your new install version of web.config back into the site folder
  4. Attach the real site's DB file to SQL Server and configure it
    1. Make sure you have the correct user as a login in your SQL server
    2. Attach the real db file to teh SQL server
    3. adjust login info if needed
    4. modufy your web.config file to change the connection strings to match the DB adn login info
  5. go to the portalalias table and change the alias to teh local install's (refer to the fresh install's info)

From there it should work - let me know if you get errors still.

Sounds like you are running with Cassini (the web server built in to the VS environment) rather than with IIS on localhost. DNN redirects to standard portals (look in the Portal table) and as each instance of Cassini comes up on a separate random port, DNN work against Cassini never works.
