Ahah, yes someone else sees this too! This is a fundamental problem I brought up before on the DNN forums. I'm very much astonished why not all community websites follow this rule, since it's usually a big security and privacy violation.

THE RULE: Username should never be the same as your Nickname, what is displayed publically.

ADDED RULE: Username should not be your email address, since email addresses change, AND might be a privacy issue -- just as making full names public as some module devs do.

If these rules are followed, username never needs to be changed. You have to imagine an Administrator going in and trying to identify people who constantly change their username. Think of a username as a friendly user id.

The new version of DNN coming out seems to be addressing this, but so far I've found the user profile UI very confusing and overwhelming for novice internet users -- is it just me?
