Yes, but should Display Name be required as core login information? My opinion is that is should be a regular profile property, or maybe choosen at the User Settings.

I agree, I think it will be very confusing to the user.  It also creates duplicate data in the system.  To be honest, when I think displayname, I think of "what name do I want others to see in the system?"  Depending on the site, I might use my userid, or I might use my actual name. 

I think First, Last, and Display names should all have the option of being disabled.

It would be interesting for someone that has access to the DNN user tables to see what people have been entering for displayname.

Has anyone managed to get a definative answer to this Firstname + ' ' + Lastname and Display Name saga?

As with a quite a bit of the new membership / registration stuff in 4.3.4 its confusing for both admins and users. Could someone tell me why we have Display Name and First Name, Last Name and why the user has to enter both during registration?
