Chris Hammond's 4 part video series for DNN 7.0 Installation says to put the DNN software in:

C:\websites\dnndev.me

Am I correct that for IIS the website software is normally put in the directory:

C:\inetpub\wwwroot

What is the advantage of using C:\websites\dnndev.me?

You can put the DNN Files in any Directory and set permissions on that Directory that the IIS and the APP Pools can work with it.

Oooh, sorry, I hit the submit button by accident. I will create another reply with my complete response.

It is very frustrating to have to switch between Design view and HTML view to get this editor to do what I want and I hit the submit button by accident.

Thank you, Matthias.

I was not sure whether I needed to explain what Chris's videos say. In the videos he says that we should install DNN using the same configuration that he shows. So if we do that then it is not true that we "can put the DNN Files in any Directory".

Note that I am not asking where we can put the software, I am asking why Chris says to put it where he says to put it. I do not understand why it is better to not put DNN in a directory more consistent with where most web sites are put.

I don't have access to Chris' brain so I can only guess.

I think it is NOT usual to put websites in C:\inetpub\wwwroot. That is purely the default choice. Most serious web servers put the content on a dedicated drive.

Personally, in my development environment, I keep sites out of the C drive. I want the C drive to be throw away. Chris probably takes a similar view.

Best wishes,
