I have a module which is larger than the default max upload size (12M) defined in web.config. I don't like the idea of telling users to change that value to a large enough size so I am looking for a hands-free solution.

One idea is to create a smaller module. When it runs it downloads and installs the remaining components. Is this functionality already done and available in source code? There's no reason for me to spend time creating it.

Or any other valid ideas?

You could probably break it into multiple installs, right? Like have the assets (pdfs, jpgs etc) separate? Just spitballin'

I am not sure what you mean. Install several zip files? I want to have a single module in the module list. I don't know if one can install files without a module definition.

There's also the batch module install option where the users can ftp files to the install folder and run the the batch install through a specific url but ftp might be too technical for some users.

you could upload the module package using ftp to /install/module
and install it by browsing /install/install.aspx?mode=installresources

That's the ftp solution I mentioned in my previous reply. It's not user friendly enough. Many users don't know what ftp is.

I am looking for code which downloads and installs DNN components. I highly doubt it exists because I am pretty sure non of the open source modules is any close to being that big in size.
