I made what seems to be the mistake of adding some user profile settings and making many of the other ones not visible.   We don't want to collect anything but a username, displayname, a text field "about me" and an image (which I made the mistake of creating with a unique name and deleting the default one).  Truthfully, it seemed like it should be very, very easy to do this.

The issue comes when users want to modify their profile or upload the image (or display them, but I am guessing that part is due to the fact there's no data). Users can't edit their profile at all.  They can see the link, but clicking it does nothing.

Am I missing something very basic?  Is there a module that has to be installed to allow this to happen? My ISP tells me it might be that my skin is bad. I'd happily buy and install another skin if it would fix this issue.  I've been attempting to figure it out for days.  Even installing the profile modules on another page does nothing, as the profile still does nothing when a user clicks it.

Does no one have any suggestion as to where I might at least find documentation on how to fix this issue?

sorry. I never tried to delete default properties (always just hided it).
is there any error logged in Eventlog?
You might need as well to modify Userprofile template in module settings to get the user details displayed.
