I found this about color in the index ascx.

Public Function HexToRGBA(hex As String, alpha As String) As String
Dim color = System.Drawing.ColorTranslator.FromHtml(hex)
Return String.Format("rgba({0},{1},{2},{3})", color.R, color.G, color.B, alpha)
End Function

Could this be causing the issue? If so I have no idea what is wrong with it.

this is the function, the problem is, where it gets called: it expects a pur hex value, but gets passed sth like "#123456".

Is my problem the function is not written correctly or that all color calls need to be hex values?

the calls are expected to pass hex values, however, you might even extend the function with a check as first statement, whether the first character of hex parameter is a "#" and remove it.
