Installed DNN 4.0.3 and am getting the following error messages when I view the website:

An error has occurred.
Error: Links is currently unavailable.

When I log in and try to edit text I get this error message:

An error has occurred.
Error: Edit Text/HTML is currently unavailable.

Any ideas? Is there a check I can run to get a detailed error message?

When you can login but none of the core module load and give this error, this usually means you only update one of the connectionStrings.  Most of the core modules use the connectionString that is located in the <AppSettings> seciton, while the rest of the core uses the connectString in the <ConnectionString> sections.  I am pretty sure if you update the <AppSettings> connectionString so it is the same as the one in the <ConnectionString>, your problem will be fixed.

Make sure you have both connection strings in your web.config set correctly.  If the first one is correct but the second one is incorrect, some errors similar to this can occur, where the portal as a whole comes up but individual module content can't be displayed.

Indeed! Once both of the connection strings matched it worked. Thanks!
