If I understood your suggestion correctly I tried to add urlFormat="advanced" at the end of the

Could it be because I have URLscan activated on the website? Is it passing strange characters in the URLstring?

If it is so I can try to deactivate URLscan, it's not doing any good anyway, might as well turn it off for good if that's the problem.

I have tried deactivating URLscan but the problem is still there so it has got nothing to do with that.

I'm still looking for the release.config file you were talking about and in the meantime am comparing the fresh install DNN 7.2.1 web.config with my own.

I have tons of probably obsolete entries I'm not sure of but I'm afraid of eliminating stuff mainly because I and IMHO a good number of us users around don't know what most of the web.config entries do or are there for.

There are differences, I can see that. But some entries are related to the third party modules I have installed and some I frankly don't have the faintest idea what they are for.

One example: In the App settings sections I have

as well as references to the FckHtmlEditorProvider

Can I safely remove those?

I'll try to execute the turboSQLscripts you gave me and eventually scrap the whole thing or try the next upgrade step and eventually scrap everything, go back to 6.2.9 an try again. I'll have to restore the DB on monday anyway thanks to the SQL injection fools, might as well start fresh from 6.2.9 and change something.

Wow... got quite a big and long error executing the TurboDNN742.sql script.

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): The ALTER TABLE statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "FK_Blog_Blogs_Users".

Do you want me to copy the whole thing or is the first line enough to understand. Tell me if you need the whole thing.

What now? My DNN sites seem to be up and running as before with the same problem - I can't add new modules to pages but for the rest nothing much changed.

Shall I continue applying the other scripts or should I stop here?

Situation update: The sites are not working. As soon as I selected Host -> Extensions I got an error, so I suppose the error is catastrophic and need to restore my DB.

TurboDNN is for DNN version 7.1.2 and up. You should backup your database before applying the script and restore, if you experience issues.
If the only issue is caused by violation of FK_Blog_Blogs_Users, there might be an FK configured, which is not enabled and enabling all constraints (as TurboDNN does) fails due to a violation, i.e. a table without master record (either user or blog).
If you can't find release.config, use web.config of an install package, to compare your web.config with. you will notice the different urlformat value as well.

Yes Sebastian, I'm using the turboScript you sent me the link for on my DNN 7.1.2 installation.

Don't know why the Blog module which I hardly use on my portals did so much damage but before I try to run the scripts again I wanted to let you know I partially solved the problem of not being able to add a module to a page by going to the Host settings and choosing the good old Ribbonbar instead of the new flashy controlbar or iconbar whichever the new one is.

After this modification I'm again able to add modules to my pages. I'm still wondering why all this occurred and I'd like to be able to use the new control panel because it looks cool and functional but if I can't get past the obstacle I might as well stick to the good old ribbonbar.

Any suggesitons as to the possible causes of the bar malfunction?

Thanks

If ControlBar control panel doesn't work as expected, it is either a version mismatch of jQuery (make sure, the skin you are using doesn't use its own version) or Telerik library not updated properly. You may ignore the blog error, according to your error messages, the module placed a disabled FK to from BlogUsers table to Users table, which was violated by hard deleted users from users table, which are still referenced in the other table. TurboDNN removed this useless FK.
