Dear DotNetNuke Pros,

Please help.

Why does editing "portal.css" outside DNN not show changes?

But, when I edit that CSS using DNN site settings it does show changes?

Please advise.

Here are the details...

(1) I use Visual Studio to open "portal.css" directly, because the editor support is way better than that in DNN, and I get syntax help, and the like. I edit the file. I save the file. I go to the effected page on the site, I choose Refresh, the changes are NOT shown. But, then if I go to DNN Site Settings and look at the CSS and the changes ARE there, in the CSS, as expected, but refreshing that page does NOT reflect the changes. Why? Maybe browser caching -- but -- this behaviour is different in another scenario, as per (2) below. Why?

(2). I directly edit the CSS using just the DNN Site Settings area, and I save it, and then go to the page and Refresh the page then the changes ARE shown. Why?

Please advise.

Thanks.

Mark,

I think you should clear the cache or restart the app pool after doing changes from outside.

Happy DNNing!

Michael,

Please help with some follow-up.

Well, to "restart the app pool" I would need direct access to the web server and permissions to change iis so that is not really a good option, for me at least.

What exactly do you mean by "clear the cache" here?

Do you mean to clear the browser cache?

Or do you mean to clear some other cache, such as perhaps there is a cache setting in DotNetNuke somewhere?

Please advise.

Thanks.

You can restart DNN when logged in as Host.
No need to access IIS.

Mark,

Timo is right. When you are logged in as host, you find Clear Cache and Restart Application.

DNN <= 8: Tools menu
DNN 9: Settings > Servers - two Buttons top right.

Yes, I meant the server cache. Keep in mind that restarting the app pool does also clear the server cache.

Happy DNNing!
