Can you please post the hardware setup that this DNN installation is running under, just out of curiosity.  Also, can you post what kind of traffic the sites get?

What's your processModel settings in your machine.config?  default or have you tried / attempted to tweak them for such a large site?

All defaults.  I haven't tweaked anything yet because I need my site to stop crashing before i can proceed.  Right now my traffic is way down because my site is almost always offline.  Grr.

Quad Xeon dual core CPU (8 CPU cores) (CPU is almost always at 3% or less)
Gigabit to the Internet
15k RPM RAID HD  (disk ques are always 0)
4 GIG of RAM  (Always underused)
Win2k3 Standard
SQL2000 (on another box, dual xeon dual core, 4gb ram, very underutilized)
1 DNN install being the only purpose of the quad cpu server
~7200 parent DNN portals

Right now my site gets a fraction of the traffic it used to.  This is because DNN is constantly crashing.  Also, DNN *WILL NOT* load unless i block the web port 80 manually and startup DNN by hand because the requests that occur while DNN loads causes it to crash.

I'm basically shafted.  My site, which used get a tad under 100,000,000 pageviews a month, now only gets 1/20th of that because of the constant crashings and inability to restart (application restarts do not work cause of DNN hanging on startup).

I'm dead in the water unless I can get this fixed :(

I know for sure this has something to do with the number of parent portals I have.  I know this because the problem has progressively gotten worse as more portals are added, as well as the troubleshooting I've been doing so far.

I'm just a normal guy, not a big company, trying to put together a huge fan site while absorbing all the costs.  Things were going well, very well, but then I grew and the crashings started.

So yea, any help would be massively appreciated!!!!

EDIT - My email address is  timgt  (at)  hotmail.com  if anybody has ideas.

I'm really suspecting a deadlocking issue - doesn't help that you're running essentially an untuned .net environment.

Check the queue limits and the number of worker threads - hate to tell you, you're going to have to start tweaking it in off hours and getting it running better.  Change one parameter, note the affect, and then try changing another at a later date.  Also try removing the scheduler from the web.config, and tweaking the web.config with the other handlers in and out  to see if anything in there is causing the issue as well.  check both your application system logs for "odd events" and also the dnn error logs as well for anything out of the norm during a startup cycle.

As far as the portals, yes, that could be a problem however it shouldn't be a dramatic problem during startup, I could see it being just sheer size and volume - did anything else change? ie: modules, or dnn version?  that could also have an impact.

Oops, yea I have tweaked the threads and connections for IIS.  So yea, its not a thread/pool issue.  No deadlocked state that I can see as far as IIS is concerned.

It is because I have >7000 portals and >110,000  pages (tabs).  That I don't doubt.  Why exactly?  Not sure!
