Ok, I'm now confused regarding upgrading from 3.x to 4.x source... the installation guide is somewhat cryptic in its explanation on how to move portal content.

"The situation is a little trickier if you want to upgrade to the Source version of DotNetNuke v4.0. It is therefore recommended, that rather than overwriting in some way your old “site”, that you follow the instructions in the previous chapter to create a new DotNetNuke v4.x site, and move any custom content you have on your old site, such as Modules, Skins and Portal content, as well as your web.config file, to the new site.

Then in IIS re-point the Virtual Directory to the Website folder of the DottNuke v4.x site. This is the safest and simplest way to move your development from v3.x to v4.x, and once you have completed this you are ready to configure your web.config file."

Aside from creating a DTS script to copy over all SQL Server content, is there a simple way (Stored Proc, etc) that can acomplish this?  Also, have the tables change significantly between versions (thus complicating the ETL mappings)?

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I could not find an adequate answer on this forum.

It has been a while since I've programmed in DNN so I feel vastly behind the curve and would appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks,

Garfus

What in fact the guide says is to move your skins and module a new install of DNN 4. This is not as easy as it sounds, hence the word "trickier". Most people will have a source install for development and not for production. So it makes sense.

Skins are rather easy as their are just directories and files. just copy them.  The same is true for containers.

For the modules:

  1. Copy the tables and data between db's (unless they reference a different core schema that has changed, you should be fine)
  2. Move the module files and dlls manually
  3. Use the Module Defintions>Add New Module Definition>Module Manifest feature that installs the module using your dnn file.

To continue developing those modules you will need to study the new proposed approaches and decide which one is best. There's a module migration wizard for one of the methods. It's available from the downloads page.

Do you know the truth when you hear it?
