I've just upgraded from 4.0 to 4.3 and everything went fine with the install.  I read past threads here about some issues and managed to avoid problems by editing the web.config file as recommended.  But, the problem i am having is that the folders under the portal root cannot be accessed from the file manager.  Also, users who previously had access to download files (say from the documents module) now get a message page simply saying they do not have permission to access the file.  Even as the Admin user I'm locked out.

Any suggestions... please.

As an update (the upgrade used by the way was 4.3.3),

Aside from no subdirectories being available under the portal root, when users do try to upload documents via the Documents module, everything works fine except in the directory list box all of the folder names have "//" after them.

As another update,

I downloaded and installed a new Documents module (3.1.5 from 3.1.0) and that resolved the file permissons page from showing when using the documents module.

But that still does not rectify the file manager issue of not being able to see the subdirectories under the portal root in the file manager nor the "//" from appearing in the File Location list boxes.

Is there a core install that handles the file manager and/or list box population that I might be able to just download and overwrite what I've got?  Or any other suggestions...

Hello joliver8,

Thank you for being diligent and documenting your progress here.  It's helped me a lot.  I too have suffered these problems (permissions in the documents module, and I cannot navigate through the folders in my file manager just as you've described).

I'm a little annoyed frankly that this (what I consider to be a 'breaking change') wasn't documented.  Perhaps it was but I haven't found any documentation yet describing this behaviour by the upgrade.  I do recall Shawn Walker mentioned some 'improvements' to the security of the file system but he didn't mention these side effects.  I have a few websites which are not quite broken because users are unable to download files.  I had tested the 4.3.3 upgrade on my local machine and didn't notice any problems; the upgrade appeared to go very smoothly so I felt confident upgrading my production machine but I realize now that I shouldn't have.

I'll continue looking for a solution but it'd be nice if somebody in the know could weigh in an say:

"if you're suffering this problem after upgrading, it's because _________ and the best method to 'unbreak' the 'breaking changes' is __________"

My $0.02

Hey Dave,

Thanks for the 2 Cents.  It's nice to know I'm not alone in the problem.  I was beginning to think that I was the only lucky one out there.  I've scoured through these forums and googled anumber of different terms and I've found nothing thus far.  I'm surprised that there has not even been any feedback whatsoever as of yet as well.  Usually these forums are great as every other issue I've had gets quick resolution.  I didn't think this one would be any different or enigmatic.

But, I'm still looking and still trying.  Keep this thread updated with whatever you find out as well.
