I have the same problem.  I ran the starter kit install and the new templates are not available when I try to create a new web site in VS2005.

I am logged in as an administrator and my other web project templates are available.

Renamed the Install Kit.Zip to Install.vsi

That's your problem, why did you rename the zip file?!?!

This is NOT a VS problem or a source problem, so DO NOT repair your VS install in hopes that this will fix anything for you.

You need to unzip the contents of the file to a temp folder and click on the DotNetNuke.vscontent file to install the starter kit.

Still scratching my head here on why you thought you had to rename the zip file?

It definately was a Visual Studio problem. No matter what I did. No web projects were showing when I selected new site. None. Just a few generic templates and NO custom templates at all.

What I think happened was...

I had to install an older version of Oracle to work on something for a client. When I removed it the uninstall program was less than up to the task so I had to follow some steps to get it to be completely removed.  Then I ran a registry cleaner to get rid of the excees. I think that is what messed up Visual Studio for me. Doing the steps found on the web did not do anything for me. I actually had to uninstall and reinstall Visual Studio. Once I did that all the web site projects returned, including the DNN templates.

Anyway from googling it I found a lot of posts saying that registry cleaners often remove entries important to Visual Studio.

I don't have to.

I read on a post found on google, that Source Forge downloads the tempate install files (.vsi) as (.zip).

It works fine if you unzip and double click the .template, but renaming the file to .vsi saves you the step of unzipping and then deleting when you are done. Not nessesary but makes it easier in my opinion.

Can you create other kinds of web projects?

What did you delete exactly? The template or the DNN website you created?

If you deleted the template and have reinstalled it, try one of the solutions below. To fix the template references.

If you deleted the directory of the website you created have you also gone into IIS and removed it there?

Worst case is a re-install of your edition VS, I doubt you'll have to do a complete re-install of windows.

Does sound as though you had a registry entry issue.

As far as renaming the .zip goes, I am not sure of your technique. All I know is that I DIDN'T do it your way, I did it the way I explained and the kit works fine.

"Anyway from googling it I found a lot of posts saying that registry cleaners often remove entries important to Visual Studio."

I use a Registry Cleaner on a weekly basis and have never experienced this behavior. I do however see this happen quite a bit when a user tries to manually edit the registry.

Good luck with your issue, I don't know what else to tell you.
