Could someone suggest how I might change the Forum Name and Description that is displayed by default when Forum Administration > General Settings > "Display Aggregated Forums" is enabled?

All Public Forums
An aggregated view of all public forum threads.

A client is paricularly concerned about privacy.  The word "public" alarms this client (and the portal registered users) who want to be sure their posts are viewable only by "private", registered users. For this portal - like most portals - there is some information available to unregistered users (the general "public") and most other information is for registered users only. The forum module is only available to private, registered users - but the default use of the word "public" evokes thoughts of "available to the general public".

I would like to modify the default aggregated Forum Name and Description so that the word "public" does not show, which will eliminate concern and needless support issues.

You need to modify the resources file called SharedResources.resx which is somewhere like ./DesktopModules/Forum/App_LocalResources.

In there you will find the current definitions for the text strings you want to change:

    <data name="AggregatedForumName.Text">
        <value>All Public Forums</value>
    </data>
    <data name="AggregatedForumDescription.Text">
        <value>An aggregated view of all public forum threads.</value>
    </data>

Just change the values and they should be immediately reflected.  If you only want to make the change for a specific portal create a copy of the SharedResources.resx file called SharedResources.Portal-X.resx where X is the portal ID of the portal you want to change.  Then modify the values in that file.

Hope that helps.

The instructions above worked exactly as described and worked perfectly.  Thank you; that was a very accurate, informative post.

In learning a bit about language localization using the above instructions, I found this to be true.  If you want to have the change affect all portals under a DNN installation, and you have access to the file system, change the resource file directly as described above.  Or, if you would rather change the language/localization resource for a single portal only (and/or maybe you do not have file system level access to the resource files), using DotNetNuke 4.3.3 at least, you can make a language modification using the web interface to your portal, too.  Logged in as Admin or Host:

Admin > Languages > Language Editor > Local Resources > DesktopModules > Forum > App_LocalResources > SharedResources

Resource Name: AggregatedForumDescription.Text
Resource Name: AggregatedForumName.Text

(the above will get you to the change I was looking to make, but using Language Editor you can make all sorts of interface/language/localization modifications to suit your particular needs).

If a problem can be solved, there's no use worrying about it.
If it can't be solved, worrying will do no good.
