Well there were a list of features portalstore did not support, but catalook did. I guess if you don't use those features then you'll like portalstore better. There were some major problems with portalstore I remember concerning managing products. For example, you couldn't list or edit products by category. It was really strange. We also needed to get a fixed discount based on the cart's total, example: $10 off when your combined purchase is over $100. Catalook now supports this.

Really?  What are those features?  When I was using cataLook, it was the best for calendar-based ticketing systems, and I had a couple of sites that needed that functionality.  At the time, though, those were the only features I remember cataLook having which Portal Store didn't have.  Also, I have been using Portal Store a long time and even two years ago, we could list and edit products by category.  Maybe you weren't aware of all the functionality which is available?

It was last year -- at that time there was a bug where you'd get a javascript error when you listed too many products, and they wouldn't list by SKU or thumbnails which was our only means of identifying each product. Product names were identical in some cases (jewelry).

I'll have to retrieve my license key and see if they will give me the latest version so I can possibly use it for another client. I would like to have at least an alternative to catalook.

They don't charge for upgrades, so that shouldn't be a problem.  The only time I had to pay for a Portal Store upgrade was back when I started with it about two years ago, before it was taken over by DNN Modules.

Great ;)

I was hoping that one store would emerge the clear victor!

Top priorities
  • the ability to use IPN so I have to do zero admin - all modules are in my Downloads area and on the return from PP the user gets added to a Role.
  • ability to plug it into my product pages - with a Buy Now button (ie. page is in my format and just a button which either adds it to a cart or goes to PayPal).
  • affiliate program - I am introducing an affiliate plan so customers who are referred to Smart-Thinker.com enter on a URL or enter a code and an Affiliate gets 20% of the sale
  • simplicity and skinning - I only have a couple of products per module (9 currently) and don't want to spend ages maintaining it (don't mind investing some time setting it up). I don't like the look of the Catalook Buy Now buttons so I want to use my own or PayPal-looking ones.
  • ability to offer other people's products - if I start using Smart-Thinker as a reseller I will need this functionality

Unfortunately it sounds like they both do all this ;)
