Hi, this seems like a silly question, but to go from 4.02 to 4.34, should I use the 4.34 "Upgrade" or the 4.34 "Install"? I have heard both, and I used Upgrade with no success. I use webhost4life hosting.

UPGRADE! The install package contains a web.config file that will overwrite your current web.config. The upgrade package has a release.config you need to edit and rename to web.com.

Thanks. Does it matter if I rename the release.config file before or after I upload it? I have the original web.config file backed up.

Ok, so, I believe I have done everything right, and I get the error below:

I also have my entire DNN backed up, so I can go back, but I want to know if anyone has any ideas.

You upload first the upgrade package.  Then you copy the necessary portions from web.config to release.config.  You then rename - first web.config to something else ( I use web.config.old and second rename release.config to web.config.  Then you navagate to your website to trigger the upgrade.

Yes, the error you have is becasue you are using the old web.config file. As Shasdowpdx indicates you first upload the upgrade package, copy the required data (encrytion keys, db info and any third party stuff) from the web.config file to the release.config file. Then rename web.config to whatever you want (I use web.config.4.0.3 for example) and rename release.config to web.config and then hit your site.
