I think the forums on this site are super for most beginning / intermediate DNN users.

Most questions are being answered but I noticed a lot of questions are posted more then once.
This is mainly due to the limited capablities of the search function, I think.

I don't know if this was already mentioned by others but I think a more flexible search function for the forums would avoid a lot of duplicate questions and would really reveal all this great info to a lot more people.

To be honest I use google (not the forums search function) to search for answers and mostly end up in one of the forums.

Even if I try to find my own posts (as a test) I mostly get an empty datatable.
(by the way "No thread" or "You search didn't return any Data" would be a lot nicer then an empty table)

To me it appears the search function doesn't search for "any of these words" (correct me if I'm wrong)
If it would, this would reveal the data in it a lot easier.

Based on the fact that data stored as nText in a MS SQL cannot have things using % LIKE % and I am not allowed to do a full text index on this column (which would allow me to use LIKE) I am screwed. The only option I have is creating my own indexing system and/or finding a way to take advantage of the core's search mechanism inside the module itself. For this to happen the core search would have to be enhanced to handle more granular permissions (private forums). \

So, until I find some work around (obviously active forums and other dnn mods are doing this somehow, but it may be a way which I am not allowed to as a core module) It is best to keep your search terms brief as it must find an exact match.

Okay, and what do you think about my last suggestion?
Maybee you could even add some statement about the way the search works, or why nothing was found.
Like "Your search returned no results, please note blah, blah"
Now it took me a long time to find out what was "wrong", especially because this is not standard search behaviour (anymore...)

A few more questions / suggestions (if you don't mind)
I think as long as the search is the way it is now, I would make the "Search in Body" text box a lot smaller (one line).
With the current size I personally think you stimulate people to search for multiple words, not a line in the Body...

And does your statement about the impossiblities of the a multi-word search apply to the subject too?

To be honest your stament is not completely clear to me (that's due to my lack of knowledge I guess).
(I'm just curious and not a ASP.NET / MSSQL specialist so correct me if I'm wrong)

You wrote

I just created a simple table with one field as nText, and I can do a Select statement with Like without any indexes (MSSQL 2000). Am I missing something here or is the Framework limiting your options?
Or don't
you want to implement the search without an index because of performance?

Thank you for your time

Timo, I am all for suggestions so please don't ever take it that I am against change. (Sometimes I just struggle with priorities of the module).

Just to clear a couple things up:

1. Subject does not apply to these rules. Subject is stored differently and is fully searchable.

As for the search question around SQL, the problem isn't just the word like, its the wildcard characters which I didn't clearly state. Try % LIKE %. I have to double check this when I have time to explain the exact problem. I do want to also add this is not the frameworks limitation, it is that of SQL 2000 and is changed in 2005. (There are ways around it that aren't that difficult as MS realized the limitation). Searching on indexed columns does improve performance, FYI, but in a hosting environment this can add to much stress to the SQL Server if many sites are using a single db server and some of those have lots of data.
