Wattup!
How can I return a parameter from a stored procedure in DNN 4 & VS 2005?  I have defined the abstract method AddNews in SqlDataProvider.vb, which contains many input parameter from my app to the db.  I also have SELECT @NewsModuleId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() in my sp which will return the IDENTITY value inserted in my db during the last INSERT.
My question:  How do I return this value so it can be used in my app?
I know how to return a value using sqlcommand & sqlparameter combo, but I don't this it is the best solution in asp.net, which is class based.
I noticed, in my Controller class, that a CBO was utilized to return rows from the database (ex. GetNews, ListNews).  Will I need to create my own CBO object and controller to return one simple value from a query?
Many thanks,
Caley

Using parameters you can get that Output parameter value in your function and have that function return that integer. You don't necessarily need a controller class or CBO to return a single value.

Thanks for the quick response.  Do you mean that I can do this:

Public Sub GenerateCIPNews(ByVal objInfoCIPNews As CIPNewsInfo)
            Dim cmd As SqlCommand
            Dim paramReturnValue As SqlParameter
            Dim moduleId As SqlParameter
            Dim portalId As SqlParameter
            Dim title As SqlParameter
            Dim description As SqlParameter
            Dim article As SqlParameter
            Dim postStart As SqlParameter
            Dim postEnd As SqlParameter
            Dim createdBy As SqlParameter
            Dim createdDate As SqlParameter

            'If objInfoCIPNews.Description.Trim <> "" Then
            'DataProvider.Instance().GenerateCIPNews(objInfoCIPNews.ModuleId, objInfoCIPNews.PortalId, objInfoCIPNews.Title, objInfoCIPNews.Description, ...)
            'End If

            Dim connectionString As String = objProvider.Attributes("connectionString")
            Using connection As New SqlConnection(connectionString)
                cmd.Connection = connection
                cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
                cmd.CommandText = "GenerateCIPNews"

                paramReturnValue.ParameterName = "@TabId"
                paramReturnValue.SqlDbType = SqlDbType.Int
                paramReturnValue.Direction = ParameterDirection.ReturnValue

                moduleId.ParameterName = "@ModuleId"
                moduleId.SqlDbType = SqlDbType.Int
                moduleId.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input
                moduleId.Value = objInfoCIPNews.ModuleId

                portalId.ParameterName = "@PortalId"
                portalId.SqlDbType = SqlDbType.Int
                portalId.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input
                portalId.Value = objInfoCIPNews.PortalId

                title.ParameterName = "@Title"
                title.SqlDbType = SqlDbType.VarChar
                title.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input
                title.Value = objInfoCIPNews.Title

                description.ParameterName = "@Description"
                description.SqlDbType = SqlDbType.VarChar
                description.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input
                description.Value = objInfoCIPNews.Description

                ...

                cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
            End Using
            Return paramReturnValue
        End Sub

Cheers,
Caley

Sort of, but here's how I do it, using the Microsoft Application Blocks Data

public override int AddItem(IDbTransaction trans, int PARAM1, int PARAM2)

{return Convert.ToInt32(SqlHelper.ExecuteScalar((SqlTransaction)trans, DatabaseOwner + ObjectQualifier + "SQLPROCEDURE", PARAM1, PARAM2));}

The stored proc at the end looks like

select SCOPE_IDENTITY()

return SCOPE_IDENTITY()

That makes a bit more sense, thanks...
So.... my DataProvider has this function declared in it:
        Public Overrides Function GenerateCIPNews(ByVal moduleId As Integer, ByVal portalId As Integer, ByVal title As String, ByVal description As String...)
            Return Convert.ToInt32(SqlHelper.ExecuteNonQuery(ConnectionString, GetFullyQualifiedName("GenerateCIPNews"), moduleId, portalId, title, description...))
        End Function

Is this how I would pass the return value to my app?
        Public Function GenerateCIPNews(ByVal objInfoCIPNews As CIPNewsInfo)
            If objInfoCIPNews.Description.Trim <> "" Then
                Return (DataProvider.Instance().GenerateCIPNews(objInfoCIPNews.ModuleId, objInfoCIPNews.PortalId, objInfoCIPNews.Title, objInfoCIPNews.Description...))
            Else
                Return Nothing
            End If
        End Function
BTW thanks for the prompt responses!
Caley
