Lets say I have my dnn portal at www.xportals.net
And i want to create a parent portal at www.xportals.net/parentportal

How do I get www.xportals.net to open the parent portal ive created at www.xportals.net/parentportal?

1. Ist it possible to use only a redirect script ?
2. Is a redirect script slower than adding a record in my dns manager on my domain?
3. Should i use the dns manager on my domain to map the subdomain to www.xportals.net ?

The only way i can seem to get anything working is to create child portals. Thats ok. But i want to avoid the alias in the url. I also want to be able to create portals for people who have their own url, like www.someotherurl.com.
How can i get www.someotherurl.com to point to my dnn installation, do i need to add a redirect script something like
<% response.redirect("www.xportals.net) %> ? Or is it a requirement that I alter the dns settings on the www.someotherurl.com to point to www.xportals.net ?

If you have exprience , i hope you can offer some advice...

Many thanks

Andy

if your portal is www.xportals.net, www.xportals.net/parentportal is by definition a subportal. When you create the subportal, a directory "parentportal" is created with a redirecting default.aspx inside. AFAIK, you cannot get rid of the ID as parameter in the url.

If you want to add other domains, just create a parent portal in your installation and assign the domain as portal alias. you also need to point the host header value in IIS to point to your DNN install folder.

To reiterate what Sebastian said, if you make the portal in a subfolder of the original site it is referred to as a "Chid" portal.

To have a parent portal that does not redirect with the alias it needs to have it's own domain name,
which could be a subdomain of your main portal (e.g parentportal.xportals.net)
