when i log in to admin the control panel doesnt load and an error is generated in the area where the control panel should be. the error is "object reference not set to an instance of an object" this only happens when i try to log in with the default username/password: admin/dnnadmin. when i log in as host with the default username/password: host/dnnhost the control panel loads correctly and i dont recieve any error. please help. thank you!

Try refreshing your browser when you get an error. That seems to happen to me allot.
