It sure seems like a sad slap in the face of the DNN store developers if the dotnuke website wont even use its own module to sell the limited number of products that are listed for sale there. Perhaps in the end its all about commercial vs open source and our esteemed leaders opted to leverage their open source follwing towards trying to make a buck off them......I encourage the store team to continue to develope a really kik arse store module and not buy into this effort to direct us into purchacing this commercial product that seems to be a surrender of the open source ideals.

I want to add couple of things in regards to Open Source with perspective of DNN.
From my point of view - main principal is  - Community where people "Share & Care"
I adopted DNN because I spend very little time & expertise to "Share" with rest of community but I enjoy lot of "little" Streams of expertise in systematic way to enjoy.

Now point is Why this is not working in case of Store module? It is big module (rather call it sub system of DNN). Simple, we need more Caring & Sharing hands. So we should come forward and join developer team actively to make the job easier and make the development time shorter.

As anyone who has followed my previous postings on this subject knows, the current DNN Store does not currently meet our needs.  Nor did we have the volunteer resources available to add all the features that were needed to make it suit our needs in the time period we had available to launch our store.

What baffles me is where people get the idea that Open Source necessarily means "free"?  Part of the reason that DNN is so successful is that we have cultivated and promoted an ecosystem that recognizes the value of both free AND commercial software.  The Free and Open Source modules are great for those people who want to use ithem, but is generally avoided by larger companies until the software becomes more mature and feature complete.  The commercial modules and services provide a safe haven for companies that demand support and documentation for their software, that is generally not available from the Open Source developers.

Both sides of this ecosystem have existed since the very beginning of DNN, and we actively nurture both sides of the ecosystem.  It is the DNN team that actively sought to have an Open Source eCommerce module built.  That does not mean that we don't also see the value in having several large commercial eCommerce modules available as well.  Why do some people like CataLook, others like PortalStore, and some find that DNN Store meets their needs?  The answer is because everyone has a different set of requirements with a different set of priorities.  Having more stores available gives the DNN community more options.  Everyone in the world does not drive a Honda Civic, and everyone in the world will not like the DNN Store, no matter how many features you add.

So if you want to support DNN Store and see it grow, then use it and help the Store team to further enhance it.  If DNN Store does not meet your needs, then thank goodness there are other solutions available and more on the way.  That is what makes the DNN platform so great.

I agree,

eliahoo,

You are confusing open source with free as in everything should be free. Open source means the source code is available and that you are not "locked in".
