In the transition from aspnet forums to the DNN forums we went from a simple model with four forums to one with 20 or so forums. It is very confusing. Now you have to figure out where to post your question and hope that the right people we read it. I had a general Development question recently and I had to decide to post in the .net 1.1 or the .net 2.0 forum. Since I'm working in 1.1 I posted there, but someone in the 2.0 forum could have answered my question.

Too many forums dilutes the number of people reviewing each bucket.

This is my 2nd attempt at posting this reply   The one I posted yesterday still hasn't shown up, yet the two other posts I made to other threads immediately after have been approved and are shown.  If you look at Page 4 of this thread there are only 4 replies shown instead of the usual 5 per page, the missing post is mine.

Anyway....  Another point for having slacker moderation rules.  Yesterday I posted a reply to a question in two other threads.  By the time both replies had been approved someone else who was un-moderated had also posted a reply, one with exactly the same answer.  So, in cases like this I completely waste my time in replying and the moderator wastes their time in approving, becuase by this time a trusted user can have answered.

Based on this a new user such as me would not be very encouraged into posting more replies (and eventually reaching the holy grail that is "trusted status") and is therefore more likely to either not take part in the forums at all or to a lesser extent than they would like to.

I know what you mean Webbo. It is also frustrating for the unmoderated user who answers the post, because when the other post gets approved it looks like they basically came back and said the same thing with the original post getting inserted at its original time, and you think, man I wish I would have known that was already answered.

Don't get discouraged though, I have a feeling your next post will go through right away :)

Thanks for your help.

How does anyone know if a reply has been posted to a question? Just look at how many users are registered for this site. There should be more replies to every thread. People just don't take the time because it's frustrating. I'm actually taking the time to reply to this thread because I really think it's important. The DNN community would grow if the forums were more open. We need room to be creative here...

I would say get rid of the rich text editor so you can have one less thing to worry about moderating. No need to allow HTML, we just need plain text as fast as possible to exchange informatioin freely. Please.

This is a give and take situation with more people taking than giving. It's like anything else in this world, you want help you gotta give help, earn your wings. I was EXTREMELY frustrated when I first got involved in DNN 2 years ago. I know that I was kinda nasty in a few posts because the forums really did seems to "suck" as the poster eloquently put. I do agree that there are way too many unanswered posts, and it takes a long time to get any help. Often times the help you get is less than useful. It IS frustrating to work witha  product that has no real support. But that's a choice I made two years ago when I quit my day job to do DNN work. My choice. And I don't regret it at all.

In my ten years as a designer/developer I do have to say that it's always the same with any technology. There's bugs and you either pay for someone to help you or struggle through the learning curve. OR you go into forums and hope someone is nice enough to repond to you (if you make it clear what you are looking for). (Hint: if you're making $ with DNN, set your deadline dates a couple of weeks later for a safety net... Also, take everything with a grain of salt with people's suggestions on forums. And always backup before making any major changes to settings or code.) With a little (OK a LOT) of patience, you will get used to the way things are and will be happy when improvements are made. Nothing is perfect. Everything changes. Therefore DNN evolves. The part where I think DNN made a mistake is making it out to be a very easy platform to work with for non-developers. It's not as easy as it seems, and I think a lot of people jump right in a get disappointed at how hard it is in the beginning. We all want to make millions off of DNN, but are we willing to do what it takes to make it the best product it can be? I know I'd like to do more.

I think it is the responsibility of the team of experts that are posting here to answer questions and provide a higher level of support (I know, time is of the essence but something really does need to be done). I also think that once someone has received this info for free that they should share it. And of course, if a post has been answered in the past, then yes we should be able to find it with a search feature that WORKS.

Just my three cents. I think DNN has come a long way in the last two years alone and I congratulate the team for thier hard work and for listening to the community.
