Specs:

  • DNN 3.3.5 Intranet site
  • Windows 2000 IIS5
  • Site hosted internally
  • Server 2 Processors, 4Gig RAM, 5 years old
  • Server is running IIS5-SQ200-Mail server as well as other programs
  • 1Gig of RAM is typically in use.

Issues:

The site has never run very fast, but in the last month, it has become exceptionally slow. 
When I upload a new module file, the site recompile that used to take less than a minute(a bit long) now takes 5-10 minutes.
The aspnet_wp.exe process takes nearly 100% of one of the processors.
In the mean time the site is inaccessible.

We are trying to boost the internal usage, but lately the site is practically unusable.

Any suggestions to help troubleshoot this form the Windows, ASP.NET, DNN, Module perspectives would be greatly appreciated.

there are several reasons possible. try any of the following:

  • check the scheduler and increase running time for various active jobs or deactivate. Very likely are issues with file sync and search indexer
  • remove all module installations not needed any longer
  • empty the recycle bin
  • clear the event log
  • disable forum statistics
  • disable users online

You may also want to clear the site log, and you probably want to disable it all together if you are running only for Intranet.

Use "Heavy Caching" for the cache performance in Host Settings.

You may also want to install the Free PageBlaster compression and dynamic page caching module.

Thanks both of you for this response.

I will get started on these updates immediately.

One followup question.

Do you or anyone else know if their might be some Windows 2000, or IIS configuration issues I should look at.

I just can't see why my server could be soooo hammered (aspnet_wp.exe -> 100% of 1 cpu for 10 minutes) everytime the site needs to recompile.

It's normal for CPU to spike, but not for that long.  It can take a lot longer to start if you have traffic hitting it though (the more traffic, the longer it takes).
