You know, I really do want to update my Dotnetnuke, but first I would like to make sure that I do not loose my data if I should run into a problem during the update.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to backup my current website on Godaddy so I can install the dotnetnuke updates?

Thanks in advance for the help.

leenuke,

You are in the same boat as I am, but it seems I might be able to share some knowledge with you.

I operate two shared-hosting sites on GoDaddy. I used the GoDaddy auto-installation routine back in May when I created these websites, therefore both are on an older version, DNN 4.0.2 .

Now I desire to update these sites to DNN 4.3.5 . (I strongly recommend not using 4.3.6 for your upgrade.)

Here a few things you should know. First of all, I have an extra, currently empty, shared-hosting site with GoDaddy. It's a paid shared-hosting that comes with all the goodies of the GoDaddy deluxe plan. So maybe you and I could use that extra site as a live "practice run" and as a learning tool, before we do anything to our currently live and perfectly functional sites.

Second, GoDaddy will be able to provide you with a backup of your database if you ask for it. I am talking here about the database which DNN uses. You probably know that the database for DNN there is not accessible to you. So only they can provide you with a backup of your database. They will create the backup and make it available to you as a binary .BIN file. I have done this request already, so I have a backup of one my databases now (although it's from a week or so ago).

Third, the rest of your site can be transported (copied) including your skins and templates and web.config file. I am familiar with this because I have established root access to my DNN installation using Web Express Lite.

In theory, all of the above steps should accomplish the task ... allowing us to upgrade our sites to version DNN 4.3.5. Then restore our skins and templates and web.config. Then sending out fresh database backup back to GoDaddy technical team to restore it for us.

If you're interested in practicing this on a live, paid shared-hosting GoDaddy account, please contact me at commonmancomputing. c o m

I don't mind if we start with your site re-creation on the practice site, just so long as we share knowledge as we go.

Thanks,
Travis

Yes! Try BackupScrip module

I have installed BackupScript Module for DNN and my provider is Godaddy shared account, and I performed a manual install of 4.3.5.

When I run BackupScript Module to backup my site, and get the error of:

WARNING: The program failed to get read/write access over the file system.
Like DNN, this utility needs read/right permissions over the file system.

Any idea on what/where I need to give permission to for this module to run?

Yes.
GoDaddy file system permissions works in a kind of mysterious way…
You can try creating virtual folders from GoDaddy’s console (control panel for the domain) and re-assign permissions from there
Those “virtual folders” are in fact real folders already created by FTP or something.

On some tests, we had to explicitly create the folders on the GoDaddy’s Control Panel (\backup, \backup\work, \backup\work\blobs) and assign read & write permissions.
