Well the easiest way I would interpret this is that - some people don't want to register on your site - but want to get news.. if you send out a newsletter, people can subscribe to that, but not be registered users... I think it's a little confusing, however, I have seen it used effectively on the shopping cart sites where people can be registered users and buy something and have the option of having further information sent to them.

Does that give you a bit more of an idea?

Thank u very much!
Can you give me a website URL which is using the role subscriber? I want to get a concrete impression.

The "Subscribers" role is a sample role which is autogenerated upon installation of DNN, you can easily delete it. It is a sample of a role which is set to "Public" and "Auto". "Auto" means that every user that registers on your site has that role applied to him, "Public" means that users can decide for themselves whether they want to be in that role or not. The roles that are public are visible in the "Manage Services" tab in the user profile (provided that you didn't hide that tab)

If you combine a public role with a fee, you can have your users pay for being added to that role. Scott McCulloch of Ventrian (www.ventrian.com) created some subscription tools that allows for easy administration of payed subscriptions, you might check out his site.

If you want to see how free subscriptions work, you might want to check out my site (www.apollo-software.nl). Upon registration, you will be added to the "Newsletter" role, which is public and auto. When you are logged on, you can click you name, and look at the "Manage Services" part of the registration screen. Mind you.. this is an older dnn version, so it looks a bit different than the current dnn versions, but the functionality is essentially the same.

cheers,

Erik

I've got it ! Thanx very much!
Then my another question is : How to create a subscription service. Do all kinds of subscription services provide service via the mailing list?

Cheers!
