Unfortunately, the new Whitespace filter causes issues with images. You'll have to uncheck the 'use WhiteSpace filter' checkbox under the Performance Settings section of the Host Settings.  Thumbnails should work fine if the WhiteSpace filter is turned off.

Thanks for the hints Steve.
Now all is working fine.

The strange thing is, you need to switch off all performance items, to make it work and work fast.
I noticed a remarkeable increase of performance when I switched off compression and whitespace filtering.

Keep on that good job.
