Major NooB here, so please be gentle with me:

I am attempting to install DNN 3.3.7 on my local server, XP Pro SP2, w/ IIS, ASP 1.1, SQL Server 2000.  Here are the steps I have taken so far:

1. Unzipped DotNetNuke_3.3.7_install.zip to c:\inetpub\wwwroot\intranet.

2. Created virtual directory named "DotNetNuke, pointing to c:\inetpub\wwwroot\intranet

3. Set file permissions

4. Modified web.config file to point to local server, and specified uid and password. Added missing line "<add key = "useDnnConfig" value = "true"/>. Changed databaseOwner to login id. Other values were left at the default setting for now.

Browsing to <host>/dotnetnuke returns "Current Assembly Version: 03.03.07
ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider"

I changed the connection string to the sa account, cleared the browser cache, and browsed to <host>/dotnetnuke again. No change.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

Did you create your DB ? If not  you need to do this first as well as creating a connection to the DB whicn you specify in the web config.

In light of the fact that you did point your web.config to your local SQL Server 2000 database, did you actually comment out the SQL Express line in both places, and then UN-comment the SQL 2000/2005 in both places of the web.config as well?

You do know that SQL express by default is uncommented, and SQL 2000/2005 is commented out inside the web.config file. So if you never unccommented the lines, even if you did fill in the blanks it's not going to work for that database.

Or, if this is not the problem, are you verifying you can connect to your database by connecting to it with your database manager? This is a good way to see if everything is working correctly in order to narrow down where the problem is.

Also, did you really need to add this "missing" line? Why are you adding this? Is this required in your version of DNN? I know not much about dnn config, other than DNN gets some of its settings from it, rather than web.config? I may be wrong, but that is how I understood it, which is why I was so wondering why you are adding the line unless you have a valid reason for doing so.

raindrops - you said "did you actually comment out the SQL Express line in both places, and then UN-comment the SQL 2000/2005 in both places of the web.config as well? "

Can you tell me the actual key name for those as I do not seem them in the web.config for 3.3.7.

Thanks
