Why the push to make all sites Virtual Directories?   With all my 3.x sites, I used IIS and simply setup separate sites.  To me it was easier to manage and kept the sites separate.  I did use some child portals...the ones over which I had control.  But the separate code in separate sites seemed a better practice to me.

Plus the URL to the site then didn't have to be a "/mynewsite" at the end of the main domain.

Trying now to upgrade to new versions, my "old" way doesn't work and I was only successful, with 3.3.7, utilizing a virtual directory.  I've seen installs on doing just IIS.

My enviroment =  Server 2003, SQL2000 & 2005, plus I've been working on test sites in virtual server.
We have an active site using Server 2003, DNN 3.1, SQL 2000 and I want to upgrade to SQL2005 and DNN4.4.0.

you do not need to use a virtual directory, just create a web site pointing to the directory, where the default.aspx and web.config reside. Please notice, that additonal steps are required, when upgrading from DNN3 to 4 (Delete all .vb files, alter ASP.Net version and AppPool in IIS web site configuration).

thanks for the reply and info Sebastian.  I missed the .vb info before...although I though I'd done the IIS part correctly.  I'll try again thanks to you.
